On the mechanism of energy dissipation in a fatigue crack

Experimental studies of specimens with a Mode-I edge crack in bending vibration have demonstrated that energy dissipation in the fatigue crack is mainly due to an elastoplastic zone at the crack tip. The absolute level of energy dissipation in the crack is unambiguously governed by the stress intensity factor range and is independent of specimen dimensions and crack location. © 2002 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
