Effect of Reinforcement with Metallic, Carbon, and Ceramic Fillers on Copper Matrix Composite Physical and Mechanical Properties

Physical and mechanical properties of composites prepared by reinforcing a copper matrix with powder particles of Gr (graphite), Ti, SiC, and B4C are studied. Composite density and porosity are determined after compaction and sintering as well as specimen hardness, structure, and ultimate compressive strength. It is shown that composite density after sintering is lower than that of pure copper after both compaction and sintering. Sintering increases the density of copper and of the Cu – 10% Ti, Cu – 10% SiC and Cu – 10% B4C composites, and lowers it for Cu – 10% Gr composite. Copper matrix reinforcement with particles of Ti and B4C increases composite mechanical properties, while introduction of graphite and SiC lowers them.
