A method is proposed for the synthesis of 6-substituted 4-amino-7-oxopyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine 5-oxides which includes a Sonogashira reaction of 4-amino-6-chloro-5-nitropyrimidine with terminal alkynes and subsequent rearrangement of the 6-alkynyl-5-nitropyrimidines obtained. © 2004 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
