Recombinant allergens

In the near future, it can be anticipated that recombinant allergens will be used extensively for research purposes, including structural analysis of allergens, determination of T-cell function, and in animal and human experiments on allergen-induced inflammatory reactions. These is good evidence that recombinant allergen cocktails will be able to substitute or replace natural allergen extracts for diagnostic purposes. They will also be useful for the development of novel, patient-based diagnostic tests. Recombinant allergens will also allow clinical trials of new forms of immunotherapy and may, ultimately allows prophylactic allergy vaccines to be developed.
