Empathy in adulthood: Links with early and current attachment relationships

Abundant literature documents the role of early relationships in the development of empathy. It mainly focuses on childhood, leaving the question of the processes at play in adulthood without answer. Links between empathy and, respectively, attachment to parents and attachment to the partner were examined among 26 men. The role of life events likely to impact emotion regulation necessary for empathy has also been examined. Results constantly reveal a link between empathy and security with parents, even after the experience of significant life events. This link was not observed for attachment to the partner. Results also suggest an impact of life events on the robustness of feelings of security. (C) 2016 Societe Franyaise de Psychologie. Published by Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
