Applications for composite materials in timber structures

The use of composite materials is not an entirely new concept in timber structures indeed the use of timber itself as a component of composites such as glulam & plywood is widespread & historically proven. This poster presentation details recant developments & trends In composite use in the field of timber structures, focusing principally on connections for new build projects & renovation & repair work. A range of nonmetallic, corrosion-resistant connections is under development for medium- & large-scale timber structures constructed from European Structural Timber Composites (STCs). A hey aspect relates to the use of pultroded glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) dowels & plates in connections. In some cases, adhesive bonding is also involved. The findings of a recent review of structural timber connection systems are summarised, & an overview is given of current research into the wider scope for application of FRC materials in timber structures.
