For forty years cross-correlation has been used as the extrapolation predictor for forecasting precipitation echoes. This paper demonstrates that the method can be extended to three dimensions. In the examples studied the best match of a storm layer at one time is usually a lower-level storm layer at a subsequent time. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
