ROLES OF EXPLANATIONS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS CLASSROOMS: PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS' PERCEPTIONS

摘要
Explanations play a central role in the teaching and learning of mathematics. This study investigates prospective primary school teachers' perceptions regarding the roles of explanations in the mathematics classroom and differentiates between explanations given by teachers and those given by students. Results indicated that prospective teachers view explanations as being an important factor in building new knowledge but less so in promoting mathematical disposition. They also focus more on teachers' explanations than on students' explanations. Implications for teacher education are discussed.
