Plenary Paper: Impact of Advanced Surface Engineering Technologies on the Development of Modern Cutting Tools

摘要
The paper discusses the impact of advanced surface engineering technologies on the development of modem cutting tools used for high speed machining. The paper describes how tools wear and how wear is measured. Once the basic mechanisms of wear are established then a discussion of tool coatings provides an insight into how advanced surface engineering techniques are used to protect cutting tools from premature breakdown. The implications for extending the life of tools is described with an explanation of how developments in tools to be used at the micro and nanoscale and in biomedical industries will impact the development of new surface engineering technologies.
