Discussion on the Current Situation and the Relative Countermeasures of the Listening Teaching of English Major in Independent Colleges

"University English course teaching requirements" set the new requests to the university English teaching. According to the requirements, and combined with the analysis of the present situation of university English listening teaching in independent colleges, this article discusses how to carry out the reform of university English listening teaching in independent colleges, and to improve the quality of university English listening teaching. In July, 2007, the General Office of the Ministry of Education issued the "University English course teaching requirements" after the revision (hereinafter referred to as the "Teaching requirements"). This "Teaching requirements" points out that the goal of the university English teaching is "to cultivate the students' comprehensive abilities of using English, especially the listening and speaking abilities, so that they can use English to communicate effectively in the future study, work and social contacts, enhance their abilities of independent learning, and improve their cultural accomplishment, in order to meet the needs of the development of our society and the international exchange". As the main basis for the organization of the college English teaching for the non English majors, the revised "Teaching requirements" lays particular emphasis on the cultivation and training of listening and speaking abilities. In the reform of the College English Test, Band Four and Six, the score of the section of the listening comprehension has increased from 20% to 35%. In addition, the program to attend the College English Test, Band Four and Six through computers has been issued, among which the requirements of the listening and speaking abilities have been further enhanced. It is required that students should write articles according to the comprehension of the listening after understanding the related information. In addition, it also adds the part of imitating the standard pronunciation. Thus, English listening has been paid more and more attention to. How should we respond to the new requirements of the "teaching requirements", and reform the listening teaching, to improve the quality of English teaching? Combined with the current situation of university English listening teaching in independent colleges, the author will talk about his own understandings.
