Pharmacologic management of pediatric asthma

Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease. Prevalence rates are increasing, most likely secondary to increased air pollution, poverty, and increased urbanization, and improved conditions for dust mite survival. This article attempts to summarize current pediatric asthma therapy. It begins with a description of the nonpharmacologic aspects of asthma therapy, then discusses the two major categories of asthma drugs, including a discussion of the appropriate use of these medications.
