Objective: To study the epidemiology of AIDS in the Basque Country (Northern Spain) through analysis of demographic characteristics and the prevalence of AIDS-defining diseases. Design: A retrospective study of adult and adolescent patients with AIDS registered under the Basque Country AIDS Prevention and Control Plan between 1984 and 1995. Results: 3104 patients were registered, made up of 77% males and 23% females. Mean age was 31.2 +/- 7 years (range 15-73). The predominant transmission mechanism was intravenous drug addiction (80.7%), followed by heterosexual (9.8%) and home-bisexual infection (5.4%). The most prevalent AIDS-defining diseases were extrapulmonary tuberculosis (26.7%), Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (19.1%), oesophageal candidiasis (18.1%) and encephalic toxoplasmosis (6.7%).
