A simple preparative method for a tetraalkyl-substituted dihalophenazine from a readily prepared dialkyl-substituted dihalobenzene, and the synthesis of novel phenazine containing polymers are presented. The oxidation of anilines with manganese dioxide led to azobenzenes in high yields. The toluene-extracted polymers gave fluorescent yellow solutions in toluene, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran.
