摘要
Inborn errors of metabolism represent an important group of disorders in small animals which are associated with a large variety of clinical signs. Relatively simple screening tests to identify amino acids, organic acids, complex carbohydrates, and purines and pyrimidines may be used to recognise these diseases, though special laboratory tests are required to make a definitive diagnosis. An accurate diagnosis can allow a prognosis and, when possible, treatment modalities can be offered. In addition, genetic counselling can be provided to avoid the production of affected animals.
