Diverticular disease

Due to the high prevalence of diverticula carriers, knowledge regarding complications associated with diverticular disease and their clinical characteristics are important for the treating gastroenterologist. Complications in the acute course must be distinguished from those that result from recurrent episodes. Diverticular bleeding occurs painlessly and without prodromes. In order to select a treatment that meets the guidelines, an exact diagnosis is necessary. Treatment depends on the type of diverticular disease and possible risk factors. Uncomplicated diverticular disease is treated conservatively as an outpatient, whereas complicated diverticular disease requires inpatient treatment. Indications for surgical intervention are, in particular, free perforations and complications in the chronic course. Resection may also be indicated in recurrent diverticulitis to improve quality of life taking into consideration the risks of surgery.
