摘要
Amid this global economic crisis, when long-time profitable industries are collapsing, food industry proved resilient, as most industries continue to run and perform relatively better than non-food industries providing jobs to the economy, feeding the world and securing safe food to the consumers. The performance of the food industry in this current recession pinpoints its broader role in the economy that either it has been neglected or undermined. Food industry, besides offering safe food, serves as a stable provider of jobs maintaining employment levels throughout the food chain, from the farm enterprise to the food retailer. This article offers new insights on the role of the food industry and its main economic functions under the light of the current unprecedented economic crisis.
