The faunal remains from Wilczyce

A preliminary survey of the remains of mammals and birds from the Late Magdalenian site Wilczyce is presented. The three dominant species are woolly rhino, wild horse and arctic fox. Bear, polecat, red fox, arctic hare, marmot and souslik are also present. The few bird bones come from grouse and different species of gulls. The bone remains were recovered from the infill of a Lateglacial ice wedge cast. Considering that only a small part of the cast (approximately half a cubic metre) has been excavated so far, the assemblage must be regarded as very rich. Refitting of bones from horse and rhino indicates that disturbance due to redeposition has been very limited.
