Fast recovery for TCP-friendly rate control in mobile IP networks

摘要
To accommodate multimedia services in the Internet, a number of QoS schemes for non-TCP flow have been proposed in the literature. However, the existing QoS control procedures are not suitable for the mobile networks deploying Mobile IP because they do not distinguish the performance degradation due to the user mobility (or handoff) from the pure network congestion. Contrary to the network congestion, the users' mobility is characterized by the fast restoration of the previous QoS level. Without considering the characteristic of the user mobility, the existing approaches invoke. slow recovery in TCP-friendly rate control, so that the mobile host cannot utilize its full bandwidth after the handoff. To eliminate the inadequate QoS control, we introduce Fast Recovery of hiding QoS degradation due to the user mobility in Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP) feedback information. The experiment demonstrates the fast recovery eliminates the time to restore the previous QoS level so that it improves the bandwidth utilization.
