The challenge of evidence-based medicine - a brief inventory

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is an efficient, modern tool to validate decisions in patient care. Its principles and aims are discussed by health-care providers of all disciplines; however, major controversies still exist on the widespread view of EBM as a simple academic instrument. This paper elucidates the background for the necessary implementation of EBM in Germany and the meaning of 'evidence'. We introduce the features of a workshop as the best way to learn basic techniques of EBM, and we provide aspects of its application to clinical practice.
