The disastrous cultural situation of Spain justifies resorting to the translation of foreign works in Larra's opinion. However, while stating drastic rules so as to deliver exemplary translations, Larra does not always translate masterpieces only, nor does he refrain from exposing his rivals who happen to make mistakes. True to his image as a contradictory and unpredictable writer, he applies to his own "doctrine of translation" a disrespectful treatment which partially discredits it.
