Unacceptably low IT project success rates continue to be a persistent problem for organisations and the lack of business involvement in IT projects has been suggested as an important contributor to failures. Adopting a Resource Based View, this paper explores the concept of IT competence of business managers and teases out what the relative impact of each of the components of IT competence is on IT project success. Based on a survey of 108 business managers, results yielded surprising insights. hi particular, knowledge of applications exerts a strong influence on project success. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
