The mathematics education centre at Loughborough: helping engineering undergraduates learn mathematics

The Mathematics Education Centre (MEC) at Loughborough University, Loughborough, England, UK, was established in May 2002 to oversee the teaching of mathematics to engineering undergraduates and to offer guidance on the mathematical content of any University module. It is required that more student-centred means of teaching be identified and implemented. The Centre houses the University's Mathematics Learning Support Centre (MLSC), which offers services to students who need help with basic mathematics. Student feedback has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. The activities of the staff in the MEC include: teaching, developing new approaches to integrating mathematics teaching within engineering programmes, supporting students, working on national, externally-funded projects, and researching in the field of mathematics education.
