Penetration of a high-speed projectile into carbon steels at low temperatures

In order to examine the effect of low temperature brittleness on the impact-induced fracture of materials, the penetration and perforation behavior of carbon steel plates caused by the impact of high-speed projectiles are investigated experimentally. Three kinds of steel plates with different carbon contents are refrigerated from room temperature to about -180 degree centigrade and impacted by small cylindrical steel projectiles using a two-stage light gas gun. The impact velocity is ranged from about 0.9 km/s to 2.1 km/s. Impact-induced craters, fragmentations and spalls at low temperature are examined comparing with them at room temperatures. Impact-induced pressures in the target plates are measured with manganese gauges. Also, a shock code AUTODYN-2D is used to simulate the penetration and perforation process.
