We present the Selection Recognition Agent (SRA), an application for Windows-based personal computers. The SRA recognizes meaningful words and phrases in highlighted text, and enables useful operations on them. The SRA includes seven recognition modules, for geographic names, dates, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, Usenet newsgroup name components, Microsoft Outlook 97(3) contact records, and URLs, as well as a module that enables useful operations on text in general. We describe the architecture and design of the SRA. Our experiments demonstrate that the SRA significantly reduces the time and effort users must expend in performing common tasks.
