Clinical practice guidelines: what they are and how are developed

Guidelines are designed to support the decision-making processes in patient care. The content of a guideline is based on a systematic review of clinical evidence - the main source for evidence-based care. The guidelines may be consensus or evidence based; for each statement the level of evidence and strength of the recommendation are defined. The grading of the recommendations may vary across Agencies and Scientific societies.
