摘要
This study characterized drug use by elderly residents of non-profit long-term geriatric care facilities in Campo Grande, Brazil. All subjects aged 60 years and over were included on November 2011 and followed up until November 2012. Total number of elderly included was 133, including 17 residents from Institution A, 30 from Institution B and 86 from Institution C and subject age ranged from 60 to 113 years. Total and mean number of medications used per individual were 212 (12.47 SD = 5.51; A), 532 (17.73 SD = 8.09; B) and 1329 (15.45 SD = 9.63; C). The most frequent pharmaceutical forms used were tablets and capsules (70.72% (A), 74.25% (B) and 66.21% (C)) and the most frequent drugs used were those which act on the central nervous system (428/20.64%) and gastrointestinal tract (392/18.91%). These findings stress the need to review treatment regimens, as well as train those responsible for the administration of medications for this population.
