摘要
In this paper, a simple ex-vivo method to characterize the dielectric properties of biological tissues is demonstrated using a proximity-fed suspended microstrip ring resonator. Samples of porcine tissue are placed between the microstrip feed lines and the ring resonator. Using typical porcine bio-material data, the layout of the loaded resonator and feeds are optimized by full-wave simulations to obtain a discernable resonance signature in insertion loss profile. Measurements of the fabricated prototype with porcine fat samples closely follow the simulated S21 plots and yield relative permittivity of 5.35 and loss tangent of 0.059 at resonance. This set up is also used to extract permittivity of porcine skeletal muscle tissues and experimentally demonstrate its anisotropic nature.
