Microscopy of calcium phosphate glass ceramics

Crystallisable glasses for biomedical applications have been developed in the CaO-P2O5-SiO2-Al2O3-TiO2 system. The phase evolution during heat treatment has been studied using a combination of x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy. At lower temperatures (800 degrees C-900 degrees C), CaO-P2O5 rich 'florets' were observed. While at higher temperatures (1000 degrees C-1200 degrees C) the floret structure was no longer apparent and coarsening of the nanodendrites occurred. This was accompanied by the appearance of anatase laths. At 1200 degrees C, the TiO2 laths were present as rutile.
