摘要：

Global climate change is regarded as one of the main threats to world wide sustainable development. In response to the commitment expressed in the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, a project has been developed in order to provide a scientific and technological information base for the Portuguese industrial sector. The main goal of this study was an overview on the greenhouse gas emissions in Portugal, particularly those gases inluded in the Kyoto protocol and emitted by the industrial sector. A more detailed analytical exercise has been performed for the Portuguese northern region in order to get a better understanding of the most relevant emission sources, mitigation strategies and technological gaps.
