CO2 Emissions trading in the European Union - does it make sense? The only one answer can be given from the point of view of the energy intensive industries: No. Emissions trading is only bureaucratic air control. It is a brake to slow down economic growth an d distorts free competition. Compared to the future development of global energy consumption it is without effect, only a drop in the ocean. For the global steel industry the current emissions trading system in Europe is not the right way. Voluntary self-commitments, research and development in projects like ULCOS, and common international CDM and JI projects are more suitable to achieve emission reductions in line with cost efficiency, economic growth and undistorted competition.
