摘要
The purpose of this paper is to explain the choice of appropriate data collection methods for an exploration of how knowledge is managed across professional boundaries, within the context of an interdisciplinary research project in a Thai government research organization as an example. Design/methodology/approach - The processes of managing knowledge across disciplinary boundaries were examined by adopting a case study approach (Yin, 2003) located within an interpretive paradigm (Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill, 1997). The case which was examined was an interdisciplinary research project, the development of computerized tomography and digital X-ray scanners in a government research organization in Thailand. Data was collected by combining qualitative data collection methods: semistructured face-to-face interviews, participant observation and documents. Findings - The findings demonstrate the benefits of qualitative data collection methods in examining dynamic and complex processes to manage knowledge across disciplinary boundaries. Some examples from data collection are used to illustrate the depth of insights that were gained. The integration of different sources of data is discussed to illustrate a major challenge of the use of the methods.
