Transformation of paper sludge into a value-added admixture for concrete

摘要
This paper deals with the thermal treatment of paper sludge in the temperature range of 600 to 700 degrees C. The organic compounds are burnt and among the mineral fraction, kaolinite is dehydroxylated and transformed into metakaolin, a very reactive pozzolan, while talc and calcium carbonate are preserved. This admixture is able to quickly consume the calcium hydroxide produced during cement hydration and therefore, enhance the durability of concrete. It is compared to existing pozzolans and a flow-sheet of industrial production is proposed.
