Influence of oxide film on weld characteristics of mild steel in CO2 laser welding

摘要
Influence of oxide film, such as laser cutting edges or mill scale, on weld characteristics of mild steel in CO2 laser welding was investigated. Autogenous laser welding tests with oxidized face of joint were carried out. A lot of spatters were observed during welding operation and therefore the top of bead was underfilled and irregular. Bead width of surface was reduced and side walls of weld metal were nearly parallel. In microstructure, ferrite on gamma grain boundary and ferrite side plate were larger and vickers hardness was lower. Porosity consisted of CO, CO2, H-2 and sometime He were generated. Reason of the result was discussed in this paper with observation of laser induced plasma and comparing with Electron Beam Welding.
