3(1)-Epimerically pure samples of farnesylated 20-deutero-8-ethyl-12-methyl-bacteriochlorophyll-d were prepared from naturally occurring chlorophyll-a via regioselective 20-deuteration. Compared with the nondeuterated compounds, the semi-synthetic deuterides exhibited slightly blue-shifted Qy bands in their monomeric states, but similarly produced self-aggregates in a J-type fashion, which were dependent on the 31-stereochemistry.
