摘要
Why does Cezanne increasingly use the word "study" in his correspondence to designate all of his pain-rings? What has become of the traditional and hierarchical opposition between (preliminary) study and (final) painting? What is a Study? Why does officialdom as personified by Quatremere de Quincy declare, faced with the Romantic menace, that it is dangerous to spend too much time studying? To leave endlessly incomplete, as Cezanne wound up doing, became the curse and the privilege of any art worthy of the name, with the risk of forever upsetting any question of genre. As Mondrian concluded, in the tradition of Cezanne, I don't want pain-rings. I just want to find things out".
