Some tumors elaborate a phosphaturic factor, ''phosphatonin,'' that is unlike known peptide or sterol hormones. The same, or a similar, factor may exist in hypophosphatemic mice and humans with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets. Such a factor may play a role in the control of phosphate homeostasis in normal physiological states.
