Consider a n x n matrix partitioned into k x k blocks: C = [C-i,C-j], where C-1,C-1,...,C-k,C-k are square. This paper studies the possible numbers of nonconstant invariant polynomials of C when a diagonal of blocks C-i,C-j is fixed and the others vary. (C) 2003 Published by Elsevier Science Inc.
