摘要
This self-directed learning module highlights new advances in this topic area. It is part of the chapter on brain injury rehabilitation in the Self-Directed Physiatric Education Program for practitioners and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This article discusses behavioral and affective disorders, the neurophysiologic basis for and rehabilitation of cognitive skills, effects of alcohol and illegal substances on outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI), family dynamics after TBI, disorders of sexuality, return-to-work issues, and present models for TBI rehabilitation. New advances covered in this article include treatment of depression and mania, pragmatic skills therapy, effects of acute and chronic alcohol use on pathophysiology of TBI, profile of sexual dysfunction, and review of federal legislation pertaining to TBI.
