MEG and 3D navigation in image guided neurosurgery

The authors present their experiments in the common use of MEG data and 3D navigation system in image guided neurosurgery. The MagnetoEncephalographic data are provided by a Magnes I biomagnetometer system from Bti and the neuro-navigation system is the Surgical Microscope Navigator (SMN) developed by Carl Zeiss. These systems are first presented. Then, the authors present the methodological problems related to the use of MEG information in the navigation system. They demonstrate the interest of a multi-disciplinary environment -involving digital imaging sources, P.A.C.S. systems, image processing for segmentation and registration, workstations in the operating room-in a tailored neurosurgery in the context of epilepsy and tumoral surgery.
