Distribution of aluminum in regular hot-dip galvanized steel coatings

The final results from Ilzro project ZCO 2-2 'Study of coating aluminum distribution' are presented in the paper. Selective wet chemical stripping and electron beam metallographic techniques were evaluated and chosen for their ability to characterize the distribution of aluminum in regular hot dip galvanized steel coatings. Commercial samples were collected and examined to determine the effects of coating parameters on the distribution of aluminum in the coatings. Coating parameters investigated include steel type, line speed, strip temperature, bath temperature, bath aluminum level, and coating weight. Results of the chemical analyses and the metallographic examinations are presented. The results show that the line speed, bath aluminum level and coating weight impact on the aluminum distribution in the coating. Recommendations are made on processing conditions that lead to extremes in aluminum distribution in the coatings.
