Study on the Structure and Knitting Technology of Traditional Gensey Sweater

Gensey sweater is a classic example for studying the handmade knitting technology, culture and heritage. Through field investigation, literature analysis and weaving practice, this paper analyzes the structural characteristics and knitting technology of traditional Gensey sweater. The structure of Gensey sweater has an enlightening significance for the current design ideas with its functional requirements-oriented design methodology. Based on literature review, it is speculated that Gensey sweater may not originate from Gensey Island. It may be developed from wool clothing, which was originally used on the island and gradually evolved from underwear to outerwear. Gensey sweater has a unique structural style, which can be the ancestor of modern sweater.
