First results of the HERA-B experiment

HERA-B is a fixed target experiment at the 920 GeV proton beam of the Hera accelerator at Desy in Hamburg. The experiment was originally designed to measure CP violation in the B system. In 2000 the detector was essentially completed. We report on the status of the experiment, the first physics results on charmonium and b-quark production and the physics prospects for the coming running period.
