摘要
The Network for Engineering Design and Human Sciences was established to demonstrate how the solution of basic problems in the design of digital libraries can benefit from human science theories and models when applying digital libraries to industrial engineering design. In order to understand the potential of digital libraries in the design activity, a well-defined field analysis of information needs was used as they unfold during design work. The framework for cognitive work analysis was applied in field studies addressing to issues: identification of the various information sources and databases relevant to a design team based on analysis of its information needs; analysis of the knowledge-representation and information-seeking strategies applied by the design team. This effort yielded an understanding of the information-seeking behavior and subsequent requirements for designing digital libraries that support engineering designer's information needs.
