Catalysis of alkene and alkyne cleavage to carboxylic acids by ruthenium trichloride in the presence of an excess of periodic acid has been studied in biphasic H2O - CC4-CH3CN media, and is found to be simple and effective. The active catalyst is shown to be RuO4.
