The notion of desire continues to change within the psychoanalytic community. How do psychoanalytic theories define desire, and where is motivation and action toward our desires born? In an attempt to explore these questions, I review three presenters' papers discussed at the American Psychological Association's (APA's) Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) panel, "Thoughts, Words, and Deeds: Transformations of Desire" that was held at the APA Annual Convention in San Francisco in August 2001. The panelists included Elisabeth Young-Bruehl, PhD, Jonathan Slavin, PhD, and Michael Bader, DMH.
