On November 6, 1997, the Muhleberg Nuclear Power Station in Switzerland has been in commercial operation for twenty-five rears. The plans is equipped with a boiling water reactor made by General Electric whose initial net power of 306 MWe was raised To 355 MWe in two steps. The GE-ABB consortium built the plant within four years between 1966 and 1970. The reactor went critical for the first time on March 8, 1971. As a consequence of a major fire in the commissioning phase the delivery of KKM was delayed until November 6, 1972. KKM meets approx. 40% of the electric power requirement of ifs operating company, BKW FMB Energie AG. It is for this reason that alternatives examined on behalf of the Swiss government to find a substitute for KKM are not easily put into effect. Safe operation of the plant beyond the year 2012 is considered Sensible by the safety authorities.
