Vortex breakdown in confined swirling flow of a dilute flexible polymer solution

摘要
A torsionally driven cavity flow has been used to show the dramatic influence of elasticity on the swirling flow of low viscosity dilute polyacrylamide solutions. The exercise domain of vortex breakdown occurred at significantly greater Reynolds numbers for 45ppm polyacrylamide than for the Newtonian glycerol-water solvent of similar shear viscosity. Vortex breakdown appeared to be totally suppressed for a 75ppm polyacrylamide solution at the maximum Reynolds number tested.
