CRYSTAL STRUCTURE ANALYSIS OF HOMOLOGOUS COMPOUNDS ALa4Ti4O15 (A=Ba, Sr and Ca) AND THEIR MICROWAVE DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES

Relationships between the crystal structure and the microwave dielectric properties of homologous compounds ALa(4)Ti(4)O(15) (A=Ba, Sr and Ca) have been investigated for the design of new materials with higher dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) and quality factor (Q.f). X-ray diffraction techniques confirmed that BaLa4Ti4O15 ceramics showed the smallest internal strain due to the ordering of Ba2+ and La3+ ions in A-sites. These ceramics showed a relatively high epsilon(r) of 44.4. In contrast, CaLa4Ti4O15 ceramics showed the highest Q.f of 50,246 (GHz) due to the decrease of distance between A-site ions and nearby oxygen layers. On the other hand, SrLa4Ti4O15 ceramics showed a near zero temperature coefficient of resonant frequency tau(f) of -8.4 (ppm/degrees C) that was lower than those measured for any of the other compounds of this study. Ionic displacement and crystallographic arrangement were discussed to clarify the effects of crystal structure on the microwave dielectric properties of ALa(4)Ti(4)O(15) (A=Ba, Sr and Ca) homologous compounds.
