A massive reorganization of its national healthcare network, coupled with new goals of primary care and preventive care-provided in the highest quality and most cost-efficient manner-prompted the US Department of Veterans Affairs to identify innovative models of nursing practice that would promote needed change. Using these events as a case study, the author discusses why innovation is essential in today's successful health care organizations and explores methods by which innovative practices can be identified.
