Music collections at the Newberry Library

The Newberry Library is an independent humanities research library in Chicago, Illinois. The music collection at the Newberry is strong in European and American music from the Medieval period through the mid-twentieth century. The collection contains many rare and original manuscripts and printed sources that are scarce or unique in the United States. Strengths of the collection include the history and theory of music, liturgical works, opera scores and libretti. The collection is comprised of original manuscript materials, rare and antiquarian printed materials, 80,000 printed scores, critical editions, performance editions, over 100,000 pieces of sheet music, 60,000 monographs about topics in music, and music periodicals.
